More than 300 students at 12 primary schools are currently receiving support under the “adopt a classroom programme”, which is a component of the Zero Hunger Trust Fund.

This programme has been designed to assist children from communities with the highest levels of poverty in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with meals and other basic necessities to ensure that they attend school regularly.

Schools included on the programme includes: Chateaubelair Methodist, Barrouallie Anglican, Barrouallie Government, Fair Hall Primary School, Sandy Bay Government, Fancy Government School, Mayreau Primary School, Rose Hall Government School, Clare Valley Government School, Calliaqua Anglican School, Lauders Primary School and Gomea Government School.

Minister of Economic Planning and Sustainable Development, Camillio Gonsalves says the programme includes the provision of meals each day, the provision of all text books recommended by the Ministry of Education, and $350 to each child to assist with the purchase of school uniforms and other school supplies.

Minister Gonsalves said 57 of the students who received vision testing were found to need spectacles which will be provided under the Zero Hunger Trust Fund.

He also noted that the Zero Hunger Trust Fund is now paying for all of the school feeding programmes at the 12 schools under the “adopt a classroom programme”.
