The government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is arranging to have repair works carried out on several schools here.

On Monday May 8, 2017, the St Vincent and the Grenadines Teachers’ Union (SVGTU) said in a release that it is alarmed and extremely concerned about the deteriorating conditions at many schools across the country including: Kingstown Government School, Kingstown Anglican School, and the St. Clair Dacon Secondary School.

The Union contends that these schools are currently unfit for use as they pose a significant threat to the health and safety of staff and students and other users of the building and called on the Ministry of Education to take immediate action and implement the steps necessary to correct the situation.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, speaking at a press conference yesterday admitted that a number of schools are indeed in need of repair, and said that there is a million dollars in the Capital Estimates for the upgrade of school premises.

He noted that repair works are currently being carried out on the Dorsetshire Hill Government School.

The Prime Minister said the Kingstown Government School is to be repaired and upgraded to be a Disaster Shelter, but he noted that the project is held up because the Ministry of Education is currently unable to find suitable accommodation to relocate the students and staff of the school.
