The District Medical Officer assigned to the Mental Health Centre, who has been evaluating Yugge Farrell, the young lady remanded to the facility for evaluation, earlier this month by the Kingstown Magistrate Court, is a qualified Psychiatrist.
Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, speaking on radio here on WEFM this morning, said that Dr. Sonasree Jam-mu-la-pa-ti, has a Doctor of Medicine in Psychiatry from the NTR University of Health Sciences in India, and is registered as a qualified Psychiatrist with the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council in India.
Dr. Jam-mu-la-pa-ti had signed the medical report which concluded that Ms. Farrell was not fit to plead to the charge brought against her when she reappeared at the Kingstown Magistrate Court on Monday January 22, 2018.
Dr. Gonsalves’ comment comes in wake of a statement made by Grant Connell, the lawyer representing Ms. Farrell, that the Court should not be guided by the report as it was not prepared by a Psychiatrist.
The Prime Minister also said that Dr. Karen Providence, the registrar at the Mental Health Center has university qualifications in psychology, and training in psychotherapy.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gonsalves went on to state that the officials at the Mental Health facility also consulted with a medical practitioner, working at one of the Medical Schools here, who is qualified as a psychiatrist.
