The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment says the first case of Zika virus here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines was contracted by a 34 year old female resident of Union Island.

The case was confirmed on Tuesday February 23rd, following tests carried out by the Caribbean Regional Public Health Agency (CARPHA).

The woman has since recovered and is not reported to have had any history of recent travel.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Simone Keizer-Beache reassured Vincentians that the Health Ministry has taken and will continue to take all necessary steps to minimize the possibility of a major outbreak, and she reinforced that the most important measure is to reduce the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, the vector that transmits the Zika Virus.

Dr. Keizer-Beache urges residents not to panic but she is encouraging persons who are suspicious that they may have Zika to seek medical attention.
