St. Vincent and the Grenadines is poised to assume chairmanship of ECOSOC, the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

ECOSOC is one of the six main organs of the UN and which is the principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues, as well as for implementation of the internationally agreed development goals.

This was disclosed this morning by Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves at a media conference at Cabinet Room.

The Prime Minister said that barring anything ‘cataclysmic’, St. Vincent and the Grenadines will become the new chair of ECOSOC on July 26.

He noted that Inga Rhonda King, the Permanent Representative of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the United Nations (UN), is doing good work at the UN.

In September 2016, St. Vincent and the Grenadines was elected chair of the fifth committee which deals with the budget and administration at the UN.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gonsalves said that St. Vincent and the Grenadines is continuing in earnest with its campaign to become a non permanent member of the UN Security Council for the two year period 2020-2021.

The elections are scheduled to be held in June 2019.

Dr. Gonsalves reiterated that if successful, St. Vincent and the Grenadines would be the smallest country ever to be elected to sit on the UN Security Council.

The Prime Minister said he has written to all heads of government in the world about our campaign, and added that he is doing his part, and so too the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassadors are doing their part to ramp up support for St. Vincent and the Grenadines candidacy to become a non permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

He further noted that while “we don’t have any money to run any high powered campaign, we are running a campaign of substance and our track record.”
