The House of Representatives in Jamaica yesterday agreed to a further three-month extension of the current state of emergency (SOE) in the North St. Catherine police division.

The House voted 46 in favour, 16 absent and one member, voted against. A two third majority of members is required for the extension.

The state of public emergency was instituted on March 18 and was last extended from May 3 to July 3.

Prior to the vote, Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who piloted the resolution, agreed with a proposal from Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Peter Phillips, to separate the resolution extending the St. Catherine North state of emergency from the twin resolution extending the St. James state of emergency which expires August 2.

According to the Jamaica Observer, Holness agreed to return to the St. James resolution during July, despite Parliament’s annual summer break during the month.
