St. Vincent and the Grenadines is in the stage of ceasing the mining of sand on the beaches.

This was announced by Minister of Transport and Works, Julian Francis at a press conference held yesterday to discuss the negative effects that have resulted from the persistent mining of sand on beaches in this country.

Minister Francis noted that this is the only island in this part of region that still engages in mining sand from beaches.

In light of the dangers posed due to the prolonged mining of sand at the Brighton and Diamond beaches, Minister Francis said measures have been taken to cease such activity at those sites.

However, he explained that while the government will not immediately implement a ban on mining of sand on the beaches, they have come up with an alternative site at Rabacca where sand mining will be allowed to continue for some time.

Minister Francis said that effective Monday May 28, 2018, sand mining at Diamond will cease and operations will commence at the beach at Rabacca.

He is also encouraging the public to use as an alternative the wash sand which is produced here from the Rabacca sand.
