Health authorities have launched a probe into the deaths of a 30-year-old mother and her unborn baby at the St. Jude Hospital in Vieux-Fort, St. Lucia over the weekend.

“From our investigation so far, it does indicate that when she came in on the Saturday evening, she was quite distressed, and so, in spite of the urgent emergency management which she received, the outcome was unfavourable,” said Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Merlene Fredericks, who described the deaths as a “very sad situation”.

She said that the Ministry of Health will, before the end of the week, commission a full inquiry into the deaths of Sylvania Emmanuel and her baby to ensure that the correct procedures were followed.

The Chief Medical Officer said an autopsy will reveal the cause of death.
