Pregnant women and women planning to become pregnant here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines who feel they may have been exposed to Zika virus are encouraged to consult with their health-care providers for close monitoring of their pregnancies.

This advice comes from the Zika Action Committee in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment.

According to a release from the Health Ministry, the committee has found no justification for restrictions on travel or trade. However, travellers to areas where Zika virus cases have been found are urged to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

Pregnant women considering travel to affected areas may wish to consult their health-care providers prior to travel and upon their return they should also practice personal and household steps to prevent mosquito bites.

Meanwhile, Chief Medical officer Dr. Simone Keizer-Beache speaking at a press conference last Thursday at the Ministry of Health conference room said medical practitioners here are being informed about the Zika virus so as to be able to advice women accordingly.
