The government of Cuba has pardoned nine of the 11 Jamaicans incarcerated in the Spanish speaking Caribbean nation.

Eight men and one woman, who were held for various offenses including possession of drugs and drug trafficking will be released following an announcement that ahead of the visit of Pope Francis, over three thousand prisoners on the island would be granted pardons.

As a result, the Jamaicans will be sent home once they are released.

In a release on Wednesday, Jamaica’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it appreciated the gesture of goodwill.
