Crop production in St. Vincent and the Grenadines has shown an increase of 3.3% for the year 2018, as compared to the same period in 2017.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday February 5th, the Hon. Saboto Caesar, said crop production increased from 75 million pounds in 2017 to 77 million pounds in 2018.

According to the Minister there were 1 hundred and 69 thousand pounds of bananas, valued at approximately 2 million dollars, exported to the regional markets in 2018, compared to 1,358 tonnes valued at 1.6 Million dollars exported at the same period in 2017.

The Minister said there has been a 0.8 % increase in volume and a 21 % growth in the value of bananas, exported to the regional markets.

Minister Caesar said this increase is mainly because there is a higher price being given on the St. Kitts Market as opposed to the Markets in Trinidad and Tobago.

Minister Caesar also disclosed that there was a 5% increase in yield in other crops from January to September 2018 relative to the same period in 2017.
