Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon. Sir Louis Straker says St. Vincent and the Grenadines stands in solidarity with the Government of Venezuela, in recognizing the legitimacy of Nicholas Maduro’s Presidency.

Speaking in parliament today, Sir Louis said the Government took the decision to vote against a resolution by the OAS, who called for the denunciation of the new term of Nicholas Maduro as Venezuela’s president on January 10th, is a demonstration of principle.

Quoting from the United Nations Charter, Chapter 1 article 2, Sir Louis says it is imperative that international law be upheld.

Sir Louis said on the 21st may 2018, Maduro won the elections for among a field of 5 candidates in a voted that was declared free and fair by hundreds of international observers.

On January 10th the OAS adopted a resolution that recognized the worsening political, economic, social and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, rejected the new term of Mr. Maduro and called for new presidential elections, with all necessary guarantees of a free, fair and legitimate process. During the vote there was a vote of 19 for, 6 against and 8 abstentions.
