This country’s Minister of Finance, Camillo Gonsalves, said it is critical for the Government invest in the safety and security of fisher folks here.
Speaking at a special ceremony at the Cruise Ship Terminal yesterday, to mark the commissioning of Capt. Hugh Mulzac Coast Guard vessel, Minister Gonsalves said in 2018 there were over 70 marine evacuations from the Grenadines to the main land St. Vincent for Health Reasons.
This he said is an indication of the seriousness with which the government views the protection of citizens here.
Before the commissioning of the new vessel, the SVG Coast Guard Service had three 33-feet safe boats, one hurricane 92 Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs), two 30-foot RHIBs recently donated by Japan, and “the old and faithful” 40-foot long Hairoun, which is “partly operational” and a small pirogue.
