Tunisian security forces have killed five suspected Islamist militants in the mountains near the central town of Gafsa, an interior ministry spokesman told AP news agency.

Tunisia has declared a state of emergency after 38 tourists including 30 Britons were killed in an attack by an Islamist gunman in the beach resort of Sousse on June 26th, 2015.

Thousands of British tourists have left the country after a new travel alert from the UK foreign office.

The advice prompted criticism from the Tunisian government, which said it had done all it could to protect tourists. But the UK defended the move, with the foreign secretary saying it was “too big a risk” not to issue the advice.
