The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment has formulated proactive measures which are being implemented as part of the national response to the Zika Virus.

Minister of Health, Hon. Luke Browne speaking at a press conference yesterday at the Ministry’s conference room said he has held several meetings pertaining to the virus with a broad range of stakeholders here, as well relevant experts both locally and in the region.

Given that the Zika virus has been linked to increased cases of microcephaly – a neurological disorder that causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads, Minister Browne said his Ministry is urging a cautious approach on the part of pregnant women and those planning to become pregnant and important support structures have been put in place.

Minister Browne said the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital is able to take blood samples which will be sent for testing at the Trinidad-based Caribbean Regional Public Health Agency (CARPHA).

Meanwhile, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Simone Keizer-Beache is appealing to persons who may be displaying symptoms of Zika virus to seek medical attention.
