Police in Jamaica yesterday reported that 157 illegal guns and 1,960 assorted rounds of ammunition have been seized since the launch of the ‘Get the Guns’ campaign in September.

Area One, which comprises of Westmoreland, Trelawny, Hanover and St. James, accounts for 34 per cent of the guns while Area Four, which comprises of the Kingston Central, Kingston Eastern, Kingston Western, St. Andrew South and St. Andrew Central Divisions, accounted for 25 per cent of the firearms seized.

Area 2 (Portland, St. Mary and St. Ann), Area 3 (Clarendon, Manchester and St. Elizabeth) and Area 5 (St. Andrew North, St. Catherine North, St. Catherine South and St. Thomas) accounted for the remaining 31 per cent of the firearms seized.

The campaign’s success also extended beyond Jamaica’s shores with the seizure of 13 firearms in Haiti destined for Jamaica.

Jamaican investigators were credited with assisting their Haitian counterparts in providing intelligence and on the ground support leading to the seizure.
