The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) will be taking robust action against tax defaulters here who have not taken advantage of the tax amnesty period offered by the government earlier this year to settle their tax arrears.

Finance Minister Camillio Gonsalves disclosed yesterday that during the tax amnesty, about 8 million dollars was collected from delinquent tax payers. However, he noted that this falls quite short of the amount of money they expected to collect.

In his Budget presentation earlier this year, the Finance Minister had said that the government is owed approximately 300 million dollars in taxes, inclusive of interests and penalties.

For those non-compliant tax payers who failed to take advantage of the tax amnesty, particularly those employers and businesses who have not paid over Value Added Tax (VAT) and PAYE to the government, Minister Gonsalves said legal action is being initiated against those persons.

The Finance Minister is appealing to those business and individuals who owe significant amounts of VAT and PAYE to the government to contact the Inland Revenue Department to settle their taxes owed.
