The House of Hope Society, a registered non-profit organization here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, is observing World AIDS Day, which is observed internationally on December 1 each year.

World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day, with the first being held in 1988.

It provides an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate those who have died.

Globally, an estimated 36.7 million people have HIV and more than 35 million people have died from the virus, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

This year theme is “Increasing Impact through Transparency, Accountability and Partnerships.” And House of Hope has chosen the sub-theme “Retooling for Greater Service.”

Roseclair Charles, the Director in charge of Operations at House of Hope Society told WEFM News that the society which is located at Stoney Ground opposite the Kingstown Government School, offers home-based care and support to terminally ill persons, including those living with HIV/AIDS throughout the country.

Ms. Charles said that at the House of Hope Society they are aware of eight persons who would have died from AIDS related illnesses in recent weeks.

She noted that Stigma and discrimination against persons living with HIV/AIDS is still widespread here and needs to be addressed.

According to Ms. Charles a more aggressive HIV/AIDS campaign needs to be done to sensitize persons about this deadly disease.

In observance of World AIDS Day 2017, members of the Society participated in worship services at their usual places of worship at the start of the week.

Persons who are interested in supporting the work of the House of Hope can contact members of the Board or the Head Office at Stoney Grounds.

The House of Hope Society is run by a 15-member board. The President is Pastor Wade Carter, Secretary Rochelle Morgan and Treasurer Michele Samuel. Roseclair Charles is the Director in charge of Operations.
