Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has said that Paramount Chief-the Right Excellent Joseph Chatoyer is a national hero for all of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Prime Minister Gonsalves made the assertion as he delivered the feature address at the annual National Heroes Day Wreath laying ceremony yesterday March 14-National Heroes Day- at the obelisk at Dorsetshire Hill.

Joseph Chatoyer, the paramount chief of the Black Caribs (Garifuna), was officially declared the first National Hero of St. Vincent and the Grenadines on March 14, 2002, in accordance with the National Heroes Act (2002).

During his remarks, Dr. Gonsalves also outlined the criteria established by parliament that must be met for a person to be a named a National hero here.

Meanwhile, Parliamentary Representative for West Kingstown Daniel Cummings said in spite of numerous discussions surrounding Joseph Chatoyer, he has been generally accepted as a National Hero here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
