The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has endorsed St. Vincent and the Grenadines candidacy to become a non permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines is seeking to become a non permanent member of the UN Security Council for the two year period 2020-2021.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves made the announcement this morning from Haiti where he attended the 29th Inter-Sessional Summit of CARICOM Heads of Government from February 26-27, 2018.

The elections are scheduled to be held in June 2019, and Prime Minister Gonsalves said St. Vincent and the Grenadines now has to begin its campaign in earnest.

He said that if successful, St. Vincent and the Grenadines would be the smallest country ever to be elected to sit on the UN Security Council.

Prime Minister Gonsalves said that St. Vincent and the Grenadines will be addressing issues of peace and international order.

“We addressing issues of peace and international order, and where climate change is vital. And the vulnerability of small island countries and small land lock states, we have a role in these respects to maintain peace and good order in the world, and we have a perspective to bring to peace and security issues”

“There is a small island exceptionalism which needs to be properly addressed and articulated,” Dr. Gonsalves said as he spoke via telephone on the Shakeup program here on WEFM, from the airport in Haiti where he was waiting to board a flight to Suriname for an official visit.

“We have fifty-seven (57) Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the world out of one hundred and ninety odd countries in the United Nations, this is a significant constituency. And these are in the Caribbean, in the Pacific and of course in what is called Asia, Africa, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean and South China Seas,” Dr. Gonsalves added.

He said the issues to be addressed by St. Vincent and the Grenadines are important ones that touch and concern the real livelihoods of people, and very importantly to give the young people hope for the future.

Prime Minister Gonsalves indicated that CARICOM Foreign Minister had accepted St. Vincent and the Grenadines candidacy to become a non permanent member of the UN Security Council several years ago, however, this country was not successful in its bid at that time.

  1. I don’t think I like the sound of that.

Do we – the rest of the world, far less others in the Caribbean – really want a proven corrupt, lying, abusive, incompetent, vicious, self-important bumbling Napoleonic and political person on the Security Council of the United Nations overseeing the honesty and human rights of everyone else?

PM Ralph Gonsalves already has family members in his government, now he is priming his son to replace him as the head of the country. Againwst their will and against all advice he just spent a Billion of his taxpayers dollars to perch a new airport on his coastline with unsuitable terrain and an unsuitable runway direction.

Enough with this never-ending quest for power and influence, better to find one of the other small countries which has a more developed political framework and preferably one foot in civilisation.
