This country’s Minister of Finance, Camillo Gonsalves has expressed the view that some commercial banks here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines are “ripping off Vincentians in the use of ATM cards in particular.”

He said at a press conference yesterday that the charges for using ATMs range from acceptable to unacceptable.

Minister Gonsalves said his ministry is still gathering data but he hopes to have a conversation with the banks about these charges associated with the use of ATM cards.

The Finance Minister noted that over the past few weeks people have been sharing with him screenshots showing a bank charging as much as 2 per cent of the value of a withdrawal if it is done at another bank’s ATM.

He said he has discussed this issue with Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), Timothy Antoine.
