A team from the World Bank is currently in state conducting an assessment of St. Vincent and the Grenadines capacity, inside and outside the government, to implement a programme to make more of the government’s data available to the public and to businesses.

Open Data is data, usually generated by the Government, that can be freely used, reused and redistributed without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms.

According to the World Bank, this will assist with increasing transparency and stimulating business innovation and new business creation.

Minister of Economic Planning, Sustainable Development, Information and Labour, Camillio Gonsalves in addressing stakeholders at a presentation and briefing on Open Data hosted yesterday by the World Bank at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Conference Room, said this nation will be better off if more government data is readily available to the public.

Minister Gonsalves said the government is doing a superb job in data collection and analysis; however he noted that the massive potential of the data is not being utilized as should.

He said more needs to be done to make government data more openly available; adding that money is to be made if this is done.
