Seventeen political parties, plus five Independents, amounting to 132 candidates, are contesting the September 7 general election, according to information released Tuesday by the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) in Trinidad and Tobago.

This was released after Monday’s Nomination Day exercise.

The PNM is the only party contesting all 41 seats; followed by the UNC which is contesting 28 seats and the ILP which is contesting 26 seats.

The five Independent candidates are running in the constituencies of Cumuto/Manzanilla, Diego Martin West, Lopinot/Bon Air West, St Joseph and Tobago East.
